FAQ

  • Is Jazz dance like Jazz Music?

Jazz dance comes from the same era, but you definitely don’t have to dance to jazz music.

Jazz dance is athletic, powerful, technical, and generally more upbeat. There’s many styles within Jazz dance like Broadway, Fosse, traditional, Afro-jazz, jazz funk, contemporary jazz, and commercial.

  • Is Tap a dying style?

No! Tap dance can seem really removed from the rest of studio dance because it’s a percussive dance style.

Its popularity started to falter back in 1949 when Bill “Bojangles” Robinson passed away, but it had a resurgence in the 80’s.

If anything, dancers are finding a great appreciation for the benefits of tap class now more than ever.

  • Lyrical vs Contemporary

You’ll see a LOT of contemporary dance online and on TV shows. It’s fluid styling, emotional storytelling, and commercial appeal make this a popular style among dancers.

While contemporary can express artistry in an abstract way using modern technique, lyrical uses more ballet and jazz technique and relies on the song to tell the story.

Modern comes from contemporary ballet and can appear very geometric and/or interpretive.

  • Do you need to take Ballet?

Not necessarily. Ballet technique is very precise and exact and while it is used as a base for other styles, it’s kind of it’s own thing.

Jazz and lyrical will borrow terms and moves, but that doesn’t make them “ballet”. You’ll still learn the technique you need in each class.

  • What are the Benefits of Tap Dance?

Tap is music and music is math which makes you smart! Tap is also excellent cardio and works your fine motor skills and muscles in the feet.

Musicality is one of the main benefits for dancers who do other styles. It teaches you to listen and understand music structure. When everyone can count the music the same, you’ll have a more cohesive group.

You’ll also improve in balance and ankle and toe strength.

  • Isn't "Attitude" kind of a bad thing?

You can have a bad attitude or a good attitude. We teach that attitude is resilience and confidence. Attitudes can change, too. It’s simply a state of being.

    Plus, it’s a dance move!
